With more than 20 years of experience in international reporting, Kalle Koponen has a keen eye for the interaction between images and words. For over a decade he has covered headline news in Russia, Central Asia and Scandinavia as a correspondent and photographer for the leading Nordic newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat. Assignments have taken him from battlefields of Chechnya to nightclubs in Stockholm, from the ruins of Sarajevo to the frozen Arctic. A native of Finland, Koponen is currently based in Berlin. Besides work for news organizations, Koponen works for corporate and event clients. Recent assignments have taken him to a wide variety of jobs Iceland, Gaza and Greece as well as features from Germany.

His flight was motivated by the cold war and the failure of a previous summit between Soviet Union and the US. Rust wanted to give negotiations a new impetus by defying the Soviet air defense with his light weight civilian aircraft with which he managed to land in the Red Square in central Moscow.
