Egyptians decorate neighborhoods, shops and houses in celebration for the holy month of Ramadan.
Video shot in the Sayida Zeinab district of Cairo. It shows residents buying Ramadan lanterns to decorate their houses, and dried fruits and nuts to break their fast at sundown.

Mohamad Marwan, Merchant:
"The month of Ramadan is a great joy for us all. Everyone disciplines themselves and so a lot of positive things come out. This year is so far better than the last, the souk is great and filled with people. I would like to thank God and our new leader Al-Sisi.
I hope our Lord will cast away the Americans and ISIS and all of those problems. We feel really down for our brothers in Iraq and our brothers in Syria."

Fatima, Housewife:
"Ramadan is about prayer and lent and getting closer to God. Because the changes that happened lately in Egypt were damaging, we haven't fully felt the month of Ramadan this year. The changes that occurred, the coups, all the people that died from all circles of life."

Om Walid, Housewife:
"To be honest because of all the events that occurred last year we didn't fully feel the presence of Ramadan. This year we are optimistic and at least there's the good side to the family getting together, brothers and sisters. It is a time for joy after all. Last year we were in a bad place because of everything happening around us, the Rabb'a and the Brotherhood.
A lot of the things happening in the Arab world affect us, Yemen, Syria, Iraq and Libya."

Hana, Housewife:
"Ramadan is the month of generosity, fasting and decorations. We have been preparing since Shaaban. We get the whole family together on the first day, and then we gather again on the fifth day. This year is much calmer, although the electricity cuts out continuously but still this year is better. We pray to God that it is not a repeat of last year. It didn't feel like Ramadan last year, with all the protests and civil demonstrations. It didn't feel right all year not only during Ramadan. This year God helped us and Ramadan came with joy. May God protect the whole of the Arabic world, especially Libya where tragic events occur every day because of the so called ISIS, we hope that they never come to Egypt."

Salah Hamed, Employee:
"Ramadan this year is better than the past three or four years. May God bring us happiness this year, and to all the Arabic and Islamic nations. This time last year we were protesting in Tahrir square for the good of our country and our people. Now we are optimistic. Ramadan is about the family coming together, praying and reading from the Quran. The Arabic world has been in a coma for the last few years and has become dispersed. I wish for God to bring them back together, so that we can live together in freedom."
