Inside Azaz: Syria.
Azaz, Syria,
By Ms_R
14 Sep 2012

The northernmost town of Azaz in Syria, is both a gateway and border point for refugees, fighters and supplies coming in and out of Syria, and a small town that tells a horrific story. On the 15th August 2012 the town was shelled by regime forces, leaving 50 dead. This followed weeks of fighting that allowed FSA fighters to take the town in order to allow the safe passage of many people into and out of Syria. The residents of the town are rebuilding, but fear another shelling attack that they fear is coming soon.

An Israeli airstrike killed 11 members of the same family on 18.11.12 in an attack aimed at Hamas official Jamal Al Dalou. As the efforts to find the last two bodies beneath the rubble continued, a house on the same street received a text from the IDF telling them that their house would also be targeted. The attack never came, but many people fled in fear.

Azaz has seen brutal fighting in order to secure the northernmost crossing with Turkey. It's estimated that around 10,000 (some estimates touch as high as 17,000) refugees are currently trapped on the Syrian border, waiting to get into Turkey. Many refugees have been waiting there for up to three weeks, in squalid conditions. Refugees here can see the Turkish border from inside the disused transit stop where they are sleeping in the open.
