03 Mar 2015

The Kurds’ war against the so-called Islamic State may be grabbing headlines for the battles on the frontline, but far from the fighting the conflict has been good business for 36-year-old Kurdish Erbil gunsmith Bakhtiar Sadr ad-Din Aziz.

Aziz specializes in repairs and custom guns for the Kurds, and Peshmerga are lining up to pick up one of his custom creations, or just to get fixes done on one of their aging AK-47s, M16s or DShK heavy machine guns.

Bakhtiar’s shop is located in the Iraqi Kurdish capital Erbil’s central bazar, and Bakhtiar said it is a family business that was owned by his father, who was once imprisoned by the Saddam Hussein regime for supporting the Peshmerga.

NOTE: No audio from 3:30 to 4:17

In the evening of Feb. 21st, IS launched their second attack in three days on the Makhmour District 35 miles south of Erbil. The Makhmour District is important to the IS because it is their lifeline to Kirkuk and Mosul. Around 21.00 PM an estimated 200 IS fighters entered the village of Tel Rim. After 3 hours of fighting and 8 airstrikes 63 IS fighters died and IS retreated.

This footage shows Makhmour commander Najat Ali Salih arriving in Tel Rim on the morning of 22 Feb. He surveys the village and boasts about knowing about the attack beforehand because of his IS spies. After seeing many dead IS fighters he leaves the town. On the road back one of the Humvees in his convoy hits an IED and three wounded Peshmerga are driven off.

The amount of IEDs left by the Islamic State is staggering. 'Not normal', says the mayor of Makhmour. According to Kurdish government and Peshmerga officials, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and mines planted by Islamic State militants are the biggest cause of casualties for Peshmerga forces. ISIS has adopted the tactic of heavily seeding all of the territory it withdraws from with the deadly devices, with the intent of slowing down Peshmerga advances. Some IEDs are also intentionally left in fields and homes to target civilians according to Kurdish officials. We go to the frontlines with a Peshmerga engineer team specialized in dismantling the devices, and speak to a farmer who is affected by Islamic State IEDs. The mayor of the city of Makhmour, whose community is still dealing with getting rid of massive amounts of IEDs ISIS left in August, also weighs in on the subject.

Frontline Battle for Mullah Abdullah ...
Kirkuk
By Jeffry Ruigendijk
31 Jan 2015

Responding to an incursion by Islamic State fighters on the southern outskirts of Kirkuk on Jan. 30, Saturday Peshmerga PUK fighters went on the offensive, launching an attack on the ISIS-held village of Mula Abdulla just five kilometers south of Maktab Khaled.

Supported by anti-ISIS coalition airstrikes from A-10 and F-16 aircraft, approximately 600 Peshmerga fighters used tanks, RPGs, and small arms to assault what they estimated to be 250 ISIS fighters holed up in the village. ISIS responded with mortars and small arms, and as of dusk, the battle for Mula Abdulla was still at a standstill. However, ISIS return fire greatly diminished after several passes by an A-10, which struck their mortar positions to the cheers of Peshmerga fighters taking cover behind a berm just 30 feet away.

An improvised explosive device struck at least one Peshmerga vehicle; the Kurds warned that many of the devices in the immediate area—held by ISIS just days before—could pose a threat to Kurdish operations. Peshmerga authorities conducted controlled detonations of some the devices they found, as well as buried with a bulldozer the corpses of ISIS fighters killed the day before.

January 15-17, 2015
Iraqi-Kurdistan

As IS continues its campaign of beheading and torture of its opponents and captives, many Kurdish Peshmerga fighters have made an oath never to be captured alive by IS forces. Some fighters now keep a suicide bullet for themselves to be used if they are about to be captured. This story explores the issue of suicide on the Kurdish frontlines of the battle against IS.

While suicide is strictly forbidden in both Islam and Christianity, many Kurdish fighters feel it is better to take one's own life than be subject to what they fear would be a brutal, merciless captivity and death at the hands of IS. Those interviewed say that the perceived brutality of IS obliges them to reconsider traditional attitudes to suicide.

Interviewees include two peshmerga fighters who both had their own close brushes with death whilst fighting IS. The first one is a hunter experienced in killing wolves and small game who brags that killing ISIS fighters is easier than shooting rabbits. The second one was wounded in battle with IS and is now recovering at home. His father is also interviewed and explains that he always tells his son to fight to the death against IS. Both fighters finish their interviews by explaining why suicide is preferable to capture.

Next, an imam explains the Koranic rules on suicide. Suicide is forbidden in Islam, but God might be more lenient on those who kill themselves in battle.

Finally we interview two fighters on the frontline.

Mata Hari is a new restaurant that opened into what used to be an illegal gambling den. The former club was bought by the city council in a big real estate transaction that involved about 20 other buildings. The restaurant attracts a different crowd from most places in the Red Light District. "As a city council we want the type of people who visit Amsterdam for the museums to also feel at home in the Red Light District", says Gijs Goosen, a city official in charge of the Red Light District's transformation project.

Project 1012 is named after the postal code of the Red Light District. It aims to clean-up the Red-Light District and stopping the influence of organized crime in the area. It also plans the closure of hundreds of window brothels and cannabis coffeeshops by 2015. This project is is the city’s response to reports documenting human trafficking and the growing influence of organized crime in downtown Amsterdam.

With this project, the city plans to close all businesses unable to prove they are not criminal organizations. Property owners refusing to leave will be expropriated and their properties will be bought by the city to be replaces with boutiques, galleries, restaurants and bars. So far, 109 window brothels have been closed and about 100 more are awaiting for closure. Brothels and shop owners are fighting back in court.

Tourists from the United Kingdom came to Amsterdam for their friend Craig's bachelor party. Stag parties are a typical example of belligerent and obnoxious tourism the city council hopes to avoid by refusing to give license to businesses they call "criminogenic". The term criminogenic (producing or tending to produce crime) has sparked controversy, as people who were refused licenses felt they were labeled as criminals. Since April 2014, the city council stopped labeling businesses or people "criminogenic".

Marcel Kaatee sitting in one of his two closed casinos. The new Bibob law committee (Judgement of Integrity by Public Administration) concluded that he was a potential criminal after finding he had borrowed criminal money from a -back then respected- real estate trader. The Bibob law allows public administration to deny permits to people that cannot be convicted by conventional law. 'I did not commit any crime. I have never been convicted, but any attempt at starting a new business, even something as innocent as a jazz festival, is being obstructed by the council', says Kaatee, who is also a jazz musician. 'Being judged a potential criminal is like being a leper'.
