Volunteers Upgrade Ukrainian Tanks, S...

When a shaped charge penetrates the armour of a vehicle, there is a massive build-up of heat that burns through the armour and threatens to kill the crew. Shaped charge protection prevents the round penetrating the vehicle armour and triggers the explosion outside the vehicle, in which case, the vehicle is likely to remain combat ready. A resident of Vinnitsa Oblast, Leonid, organized a team of volunteer welders after seeing his fellow countrymen die in conflict. He lead the team to Sloviansk where they are installing shaped charge protection onto Ukrainian combat vehicles.

Myroslav Gai from Kiev served in the National Guard of Ukraine as a volunteer and took part in the ground action in Sloviansk. After being rotated out, he organised a charity to provide aid to servicemen and refugees. Donations from people around the region have been used to buy the necessary materials for Leonid’s team of welders to manufacture and mount the shaped charge protection. Myroslav and Leonid’s objective is to equip 100 armoured vehicles with the potentially life-saving cage.

SOUNDBITE 1
Myroslav, former National Guard serviceman
“The shaped charge protection screen. In simple terms – it is a metal cage encircling the armoured vehicle, which traps the charge, for example a rocket from a RPG (handheld launcher).”

“An incoming RPG charge explodes and burns out between the cage and main armour. The crew, therefore, survives.”

SOUNDBITE 2
Leonid, professional welder
“After losing some of our fellow countrymen, who burned alive because shaped charges hit their armoured vehicles, we decided to create a shaped charge protection. We did all the designing, manufacturing and testing. The live fire test revealed that the armour on the vehicle stays intact.”

SOUNDBITE 3
Myroslav, former National Guard serviceman
“The main thing is that these folks can install the protection in the field. There are not many people who would agree to go to a military base, where military action could start at any time.”

SOUNDBITE 4
Leonid, professional welder
“Every protective cage is being welded independently, after which they are all put together and bolted as a single structure. Afterwards, they are welded strongly to the armoured vehicle.”

SOUNDBITE 5
Myroslav, former National Guard serviceman
“Our target is to fix the protection to as many armoured vehicles as possible, since the Ukrainian army has only a limited quantity of such vehicles and those get destroyed in combat, along with the people in them.”

SOUNDBITE 6
Leonid, professional welder
“In a very short period of time we installed the protection onto seven armoured vehicles. At the same time, we install protective screens and repair the vehicles damaged in action.”

SOUNDBITE 7
Myroslav, former National Guard serviceman
“We have managed to collect significant amounts of money through donations. Only the materials used in manufacturing the protection for one vehicle is 24,000 UAH. Leonid thanks God and will take money only to reimburse the materials. The real costs are paying craftsmen’s hours and transportation, which we can’t afford. Therefore, their assistance is appreciated.”

SOUNDBITE 8
Leonid, professional welder
“I receive many text messages from the army unit for which we installed the protection screens. As a rule, I receive them at night. In the morning, my phone is bursting with the phone calls: ‘Thank you so much, uncle Lyonya. We got entrapped and shelled, but all are alive.’ Such gratitude is the most valuable thing I ever encountered in my life.”

They lacked food and water; many of them suffered from starvation and some had become sick and died. When asked why they retreated they said that they received orders from the officers, with no reason given, to abandon their posts and were told to leave the border open for ISIL to enter and seize the abandoned weapons left there.

Professor Bola Akinteriwa is the Director General of Nigeria Institute of International Affairs. He describes Boko Haram fighters as ‘religious terrorists.’ The professor dismisses the idea that the group is acting in the name of Islam, calling their ideology “satanic at best”. He recognizes the difficulty in dealing with Boko Haram, who have the upper hand in the hostage situation and are always planning ways in which to protect themselves, calling it a “hide and seek game”. He believes that combating the ideology on every level is the only way to defeat them and says, “Terrorism has to be fought tooth and nail, wholly, without any condition.”

Yemeni Army Warns that War on Al-Qaid...

Sana'a, Yemen

The Yemeni Army Spokesperson, Colonel Saeed al-Fakeih, held a press conference in Sana’a calling on the Yemeni public and all political factions to support the Yemeni army’s war against Al-Qaida in Yemen. He said the army is prepared to take the battle wherever necessary to eradicate Al Qaeda.

Colonel al-Fakeih said the army will continue the war on Al-Qaida until they are exterminated from all the Yemeni provinces.

The army also warns that it will crush any armed group that insists on attacking military forces (referring to Al-Qaida in the south and the Houthis in the north).

“We are facing al-Qaeda and waiting for the support of all the political parties. The people and the armed forces are facing al-Qaeda but we still wait for the support of the political parties, and the community at this stage. The military operation in desert and mountain areas was carried out in a civilized manner. Our army included soldiers who were trained in gang warfare and to fight in mountainous areas. Their actions paralyzed the movement of the terrorists, causing them to lose balance and the ability to make the right decisions. The leadership of the military operations showed true skill by using 'al-Sadma' shock troops in the lead in many areas on land and from the air, and using other forces to move tactically to cover wide areas, attacking from the side and going deep. And what helped was organizing the cooperation between the different military forces. Our soldiers showed great skills and strength in fighting the terrorists. History will write about Yemeni military intelligence and about brave soldiers who went through the toughest battles and were able to discover the locations of the terrorists and destroy them. They killed many of them and took many as captives as shown in the video. As for the harassment from armed groups in Amran, al-Zale, or any other province, the military will not stand helpless and will act forcefully. In any area where the terrorists escape to and hide, we will hunt them down”.

Caliber 3 - Israeli "Commando Tourism"
Gush Etzyon, Israel
By giulianocamarda
03 Nov 2013

The Caliber 3 Academy in the West Bank area of Gush Etzyon has become a renowned training center for both professionals and amateurs alike, where people come from around the world to be trained in counter-terrorism techniques. On any given training day, the trainers at Caliber 3 are instructing Israeli citizens and tourists, adults and children, in emergency response tactics and “Krav Maga,” a self-defense system developed for military in Israel and Hungary that consists of a wide combination of techniques sourced from boxing, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Judo, jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and grappling, along with realistic fight training.

The company was founded by IDF Colonel Sharon Gat in 2002 Caliber 3 was founded by Sharon Gat, who is also the CEO. The academy is certified by Israel’s Ministry of Homeland Security, the Police Force, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and works closely with the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) as well. Despite the fact that the shooting ranges are filled with photo targets of Arab men wearing keffiyahs on their heads, Gat stresses that the training is not how to attack or provoke terrorists, but only protection. “Even if the targets are Arabs and they don't like Jews, we don't shoot people that are not intended to make a terrorist act.”

American and Russian tourists are among some of the many tourists who come to the academy looking for a different type of tourism than usual. Caliber 3 advertises this new tourism as “Commando Tourism,” where people can come train alongside seasoned veterans with real-life counterterrorism experience. The bullets are true but the participants seem to be having a lot of fun. One woman, Margo, came from New York with her young son Harry to learn self-defenses, while Mary from Fishers, Indiana, came with her entire family just for a good time during their vacation in Israel.

"They are mostly American and Russian Jews who have relatives or friends in the colonies," says Gat, continuing, “they want to understand what it means to live in a climate of war where you must defend 24/7 from the Palestinians."

The academy includes three shooting ranges, a dining room, a Krav Maga gym and a tactical training center. Caliber 3 is dedicated to Capt. Hagai Hayim Lev, a 24-year-old Israeli soldier killed in 2002 during a military operation in southern Gaza Strip.

Tyre, Lebanon | April 22, 2012

A bomb exploded in a lift at Nocean Restaurant in the coastal town of Tyre, South Lebanon, shortly after Sunday midnight, April 22, luckily leaving no casualties.

Although reports quote security men as saying the number of injured people were five or seven, the restaurant owner said there were only damages but neither deaths nor injuries.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic) – Sayed Ahmed, Nocean Restaurant owner:
"We were closing the restaurant and there were four workers upstairs in the restaurant. While they were going upstairs, the blast took place. There are no injuries, but there are a lot of material damages. There are no injured people at all."

The restaurant is located on the third floor of a commercial building in Tyre, whose restaurants and liquor stores have been subjected to a series of similar blasts as part of an alcohol prohibition campaign allegedly launched by conservative Shiites, the majority inhabitants of the South.

Many liquor stores have closed due to the prohibition campaign in the country's south although alcohol is widely available in Lebanon, the most liberal Arab country.

France: Looking Back at Charlie Hebdo
Paris, France

22 Jan 2012

Outrage over the killing of journalists and political cartoonists at Charlie Hebdo by masked gunment has spread across the world, and many fear an Islamophobic backlash. Our contributor brings us his photos and his account from January 2012 when he spent four days with the magazine’s staff, observing their coverage of the French Presidential race, their creative process, and the ethos of their artists and writers.

FULL ARTICLE UPON REQUEST

________________________________________________________

On January 7, 2015 masked gunmen entered the Paris bureau of the popular French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo and opened fire, killing twelve people, among them artists and journalists working for the magazine for years. The French government was quick to call the attack an act of terrorism, as French President Francois Hollande visited the scene of the murders just hours after police arrived. So far one 18-year-old man has turned himself in to the police, however his involvement is yet to be determined. Police have released photos of two brothers, Cherif and Said Kouachi, who they believe to be the two gunmen still at-large. Early in the evening, al-Qaida claimed responsibility for the attack, though their links to the attack are yet to be confirmed by French authorities working the case.

This isn’t the first time Charlie Hebdo comes under fire. The magazine with a circulation of about 55,000 had previously come under fire for publishing cartoons mocking Mohammed and was firebombed after publishing an earlier set of cartoons that mocked Islam. France's Muslim leaders and militants protested over the cartoons, and France's embassies were closed across the Islamic world. At the time the cartoons in Charlie Hebdo were published, often violent -- and sometimes deadly -- protests raged on across the world against an anti-Islam film made in the US that enraged many Muslims.
