Certain artists, such as Juan and Lorenzo of the dancing quartet “The Dream Boys”, portray feminine characters without having started hormonal treatments. They consider themselves to be primarily “transformists”, though some of them will one day become transsexuals.

Aleppo, Syria

'Um Abdo Al Halabiyeh' ('Abdo's Mother, the Aleppine') is a Syrian Youtube sitcom filmed amidst the destruction and bombs of rebel held Aleppo by a local production company known as "Bukra Ahla" (Tomorrow is Beautiful). Launched in June 2014, the show pokes fun at the chaos that has become routine amidst Syria's brutal civil war. The characters in the show are all adults played by children and shows are often shot in ruined buildings, sometimes located on frontlines.

9 year old Rasha plays the main character, Um Abdo, an animated housewife who constantly pokes fun at the Syrian government and the opposition. Since rising to popularity during Ramadan 2014, both Rasha and the show have become Youtube sensations in Syria and the Arab world.

Um Abdo Al Halabiyeh is not the only show being shot in rebel held Aleppo. Another comedy, 'Mina Fi Syria' ('Forbidden in Syria'), is a show directed at adults and is being also being produced by Bukra Ahla. Regardless of their intended audiences, the shows are a satirical display of resilience in the face of death and deprivation.

April 15th in North Korea marks the national holiday of "The Day of the Sun" which commemorates the birth of the countries founder Kim Il-Sung. Across Pyongyang celebrations and performances were held to mark the occasion. Children preformed with almost prodigal talent at the Pyongyang Childrens Palace; a place where grade school children come after school to practice artistic skills. Foreign performers from countries like Russia and Mongolia held a "Spring Friendship Art Festival" in the Pyongyang Grand Theatre to a crowd that included North Korean members of parliament. The finale of "The Day of the Sun" was marked by a grand 20 minute firework display over the Taedong River. When I asked one of my government minders why no military parades are held on that date anymore, he replied with a laugh. "We don't want the world thinking that's all we do here" The photographer visited North Korea (DPRK) in April, 2014.

A Warrior In High Heels

“A warrior in High Heels”

by Sergi Cabeza

It's the night before his solo performance, "Inside Out", a stage performance performed in three parts and Hazem has been in the theater all day long. He'll finish two evenings on the stage to finish his trilogy, The Nut, named after the Egyptian goddess of the sky who gave birth to the sun every morning. In his three-part dance show, he shows how Egyptian women gradually lost their importance in society through male domination. His last act addresses modern Egypt.

Hazem’s show crosses a red line that could land him in prison. In the final performance he straps on high heals, a bikini top, and struts down the stage in a catwalk. Several weeks after his show, three men were sentenced to three years in prison for debauchery, the Egyptian law used to condemn homosexuality. A fourth man was given eight years in prison on charges of running a brothel. Two of the men were accused of wearing women's clothes.

And here is Hazem on stage, dancing in his underwear, wearing a bra and a religious cap, taking off his clothes, as he slowly breaks free from a rope hanging from the ceiling that represents societal taboos.

His performance critiques how religion and men dominate his society's sexual norms. The first part was performed by eight women and the second with a mixed roster of boys and girls, but the final, solo act was to turn himself into a sexual transgressor before the eyes of the audience.

He was worried about getting arrested; however, nobody harassed him. Audiences cheered loudly at both of his sold out shows. He charged less than three dollars for tickets, despite the fact that this ticket price did not cover the rent of the theater, costumes and stage crew. A few days after his final show, he received an invitation from Tunisia, where he is due to perform in the beginning of May.

This was not the first time he faced his fears, faced his society and came out even more determined to succeed. In July 2011, Hazem walked into the center of Tahrir Square during an demonstration calling for an Islamic State. He went topless in front of the hardcore, ultra conservative crowds surrounding him and shouted against them.

“He acts in the stage as he is in the streets,” says his proud friend Diego. “He is a warrior in high heels.”

This video includes an interview with Hazem and images of his show.

Note for Sales: Hazem didn't want to give his last name.

ME & ME is a series of portraits of drag shows. Started in July 2013, this project still in progress, has led me to Mons, Liège, Lille and Paris. The goal was to meet transformists to understand their process of "transformation." They are amateurs, professionals, young or old, whether for work or just a passion, these men helped me understand photographically and in interviews the pleasure they have becoming a woman for an evening, a show or a simple shot. The interviews helped to expose the often painful stories with happy issues, but also sarcasm, ridicule, insults and disturbed others look. They also highlighted the insurance, assumption and the desire to be what they are. This temporary transformation goes beyond simple disguise. This goes much further. They do not take on a role, they just become another person they want to live for a while.
