26 May 2014

Istanbul, Turkey

May 26, 2014

On 22 May 2014, 34-year-old Alevi-Turkish protester Ugur Kurt, cleaner and father of one, was killed by Turkish police. He was shot in the head by a stray bullet as the police dispersed a group of demonstrators expressing their grief over the Soma mining distaster that had taken the lives of 301 miners on 13 May 2014. The demonstrators were also protesting the shooting death of 15-year-old Berkin Elvan, killed by a police-fired gas canister during protests in March of that year. Kurt, for his part, was killed outside an Alevi worship sight in the impoverished neighborhood of Okmaydani in Istanbul.

Following these events, the Chepesi Party, an unrecognized political party comprised mostly of young people, clashed with the police. Members of the party shouted "Katil" (Criminals) at authorities. On the morning of 23 May, a police bus was hit by a Molotov cocktail, causing panic among policemen and leading one of them to fire in the air to disperse protesters. As the day continued, clashes in the neighborhood continued. By nightfall, protesters were taking aim at security cameras. More than 38 were arrested during the night of 26 May.

Clashes Erupt In Egypt’s Tahrir Squar...
Tahrir Square, Cairo, Egypt
By U.S. Editor
12 Oct 2012

Clashes erupted on Friday, October 12, between pro-Muslim Brotherhood supporters and other secularist groups in iconic Tahrir Square, leaving approximately 42 injured, according to Egypt’s Health Ministry.
Protestors threw rocks and Molotov Cocktails at each other.
Several protests with different goals are occupying Tahrir square today.
Liberal and leftists forces have called for a protest dubbed "Accountability Friday" protesting against the poor performance of President Mohamed Morsi, after the end of his first 100-day plan.
On the other hand, the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists groups gathered at Tahrir Square, condemning the acquittal of 24 former regime figures who were accused of involvement in the Battle of the Camel during the January 25 Revolution.
Opponents of the Muslim Brotherhood expressed their rejection of the formation and activities of the Constitution Writing Panel, which is tasked with drafting Egypt’s new constitution after the January 25 Revolution.
They also protest against what they see as President Morsi's failure to fulfill his promises to meet demands of democracy and social justice.
Protestors seek a reformed Constitution Writing Panel that represents all Egyptians, the implementation of a minimum and maximum wage and a reduction in the price of basic commodities.
While on the other hand, Muslim Brotherhood supporters call for retribution for the victims of the revolution and the resignation of the General-Prosecutor.
Fighting has broken out between pro- and anti-Muslim Brotherhood protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square after pro-Brotherhood supporters destroyed the stage of Hamdeen Sabbahi's Popular Current and burnt a banner calling for the reformation of the Constitution writing panel.

Cairo, Egypt

STORYLINE:
At least one was killed and several people were injured on Thursday, August 2, at Nile City Towers in Cairo after clashes erupted between security men and alleged thugs.
The so-called thugs attacked the Fairmont Hotel at the Nile City Towers with Molotov cocktails. One of them was shot dead by a police officer according to Egyptian state-run newspapers.
Some other reports say the number of people killed in the clashes was two.
Several burnt, damaged and overturned vehicles could be seen outside the hotel.
Eyewitnesses said the clashes erupted when a man entered Fairmont Hotel and demanded money, threatening people with a knife until the police officer confronted him and shot him dead.
Egypt’s Ministry of Interior stated that the man who was killed has a criminal record and was detained for security reasons.
He and his fellows were thugs who received monthly money from the hotel for protection and when the hotel management refused the thugs started rioting, according to the Ministry’s report.
The police arrested 15 men charged of being involved in the clashes and the prosecution is currently interrogating eight of them.
