STORYLINE:
US Senator John Kerry, the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, held a press conference in Cairo, Thursday, May 3, where he reported that he was encouraged to hear of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces’ (SCAF) determination to hold the presidential elections as scheduled.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English) - US Senator John Kerry:
"It is going to take time for the economy to rebound. A new constitution is going to have to be drafted, but what I was most encouraged to hear from the SCAF, as well as some others is that this election will take place on the 23rd of May, and if necessary the runoffs in June on the 16th. There is a determination to make certain that this election happens."

Kerry told reporters that Egypt's deteriorating economy will be a major challenge for the new president and his government, adding that it is imperative that they contend with this issue in a way that meets the demands and aspirations of the Egyptian people. He warned that if the people's demands are not met, it is possible that citizens could revolt again in the face of another impotent government.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English) - US Senator John Kerry:
"If the demands and needs of the people of Egypt are not met, in terms of economy and job opportunity and education and ability to talk to people and meet with people and express their views and live their lives – even in a religious context, you can do that. But if that is not allowed, then you may see people revisiting Tahrir Square."

Kerry arrived in Cairo on Tuesday evening and has since held talks with SCAF leaders, the Prime Minister, the Arab League Chief, Muslim Brotherhood leaders and a number of presidential candidates.
