Sheikhan, Iraq

On Saturday, January 17, the Islamic State group released 150-200 Yazidis they had previously held captive for four months. Most of the captives were elderly and sick. They were transported Sunday from Kirkuk by the Kurdish Government (KRG) to Lalesh (Sheikhan) and arrived there Monday morning. In Lalesh they were dropped off at a Yazidi church, from there the released Yazidis were transported to refugee camps in the area surrounding Erbil or if they have family in the area they were brought home. We interviewed a family waiting to be picked up by relatives at Lalesh church about their time with ISIS and the treatment they received.

  1. soundbite (Kurdish )
Gule Khalaf Ali, Mother Inlaw of Rajad: 0´00 – 20´02: Daash (ISIS) gave us food and medicine and everything we needed. So help me God, I would never lie. They were very kind to us . They respected me because I am elderly and ill.
  2. soundbite (Kurdish )
Ismael Mirad Khalaf, Brother Inlaw of Rajad: 20´04 – 33´08: In the night (when Daash (ISIS) came to his village) I took my brother's children and ran away. I could not take my mother because she is ill.
  3. soundbite (Kurdish )
Ismael Mirad Khalaf, Brother Inlaw of Rajad: 33´09 – 40´11: Every 10 days we spoke (with my family) over the phone (in the last month of their captivity). During the first three months we did not know where they were. We did not know what had happened to them.
  4. soundbite (Kurdish)
Ismael Mirad Khalaf, Brother Inlaw of Rajad: 40´12 – 49´13: I called my mom and asked "will I come?" (after the release, when the Yazidis were in Kirkuk). She said "No, the doctor is checking us, then we will come." So I waited here (in Lalesh) for one night untill they came.
  5. soundbite (Kurdish)
Rajad Awdi Rashu, Daughter Inlaw Of Gule: 49´14 – 1´00´´06: Daash (ISIS) told me to go to the bus (when they were released). I would never go to the bus without taking my mother in law. When my mother in law came to the bus, I followed her.
  6. soundbite (Kurdish)
Rajad Awdi Rashu, Daughter Inlaw of Gule: 1´00´´07 – 1´10´´05: One day (when in captivity) ISIS came to take a woman. ISIS fighters asked my mother in law, "Who is she (pointing to Rajad)?" She (my mother in law) said: "She is married." Untill now they never touched me (apparently because she is married).
  7. soundbite (Kurdish)
Mirad Khalaf Ali, Father Inlaw of Rajad: 1´10´´06 – 1´23´´09: Most of our treatment was horrible, they took away the kids, women and old men (from the group of Yazidis). We do not know where they are now.
