The Arab League marked the annual anniversary of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on Thursday, November 29.

A number of foreign envoys participated in the event.

Arab League Chief Nabil al-Araby said that it's time for the Palestinians to gain their freedom and independence to live like other peoples freely in their independent homeland.

He called on the international community to work to achieve this goal.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic) – Arab League Chief Nabil al-Araby:
“The world has to realize that the Palestinian cause is the real key for implementing peace and security in the region, not in the region only, but all over the world. And the continued failure of the international community in finding an equitable and comprehensive solution for this decades-long conflict leads to continued instability in this region.”

The Arab League stressed the need for intensive efforts by the international community for the realization of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

For his part, Richard Falk, the UN special Rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories warned that without implementation of the full agreement between Israel and Palestinians, ceasefire will evaporate in a cloud of smoke.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English) - Richard Falk, the UN special Reporter on human rights in the Palestinian territories:
“It is a tense historical moment of heavy consequences for the Palestinian people and for the peoples and governments of the region. I along with many others throughout the world share Nelson Mandela's view that the denial of Palestinian rights remains the greatest moral issue of our time"

The United Nations International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed on November 29 each year to give the widest support and publicity to Palestinian cause. Solidarity Day provides an opportunity for the international community to focus its attention on the fact that the Palestinian cause is still unresolved.

Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas has chosen this day to formally ask the United Nations General Assembly to recognize Palestine as a “non-member state.”
