Kerala is the ultimate getaway destination. With its flawless waves and untouched beauty, the southern province of India attracts surfers from all around the world. For the local population, foreign surfers have become a new curiosity. While surfers and fishermen have learned to coexist and share the beaches, a group of foreign surfers has decided to give back to the community by founding the Sunday Surf Club, where they teach locals how to swim, surf and tame the ocean.

Franco Rebagliatti, a masseur from Argentina working in Kerala, is surfing during the evening, which does not happen often because of the lack of wind when the sun goes down. "Surfing in India is a really deep experience. And it's very unpredictable. You will never be able to really understand how everything works, socially and surfing wise. So it will test you in many ways. But once you get through that and are ready to deal with unpredictability, the reward is truly beautiful", he says.

Franco, a masseur from Argentina currently working in Kerala, surfing. "Surfing helps communities in many ways. When introducing surfing in new places, you have to carry a strong message. Surfing should be a way for local kids to learn how to interact with the ocean and bring more knowledge to the community. It should also teach young people an alternative to smoking and drinking. It should encourage them to choose a heallty lifestyle", he says.

Joshua Stenning, from England, is one of the founders of the Sunday Surf Club in Kerala, where young local Indians are taught how to surf. We arranged to meet with local boys once a week and give them our full attention to teach them. We started to teach them how to swim and some basic ocean safety rules. Then we started to teach them how to surf. These skills now allow them to enjoy the perfect waves on their own door step with some degree of style and skills too, instead of looking at the waves with fear, he explains.
